Two changes have now been merged.
1: When you are in a personal or group inbox, search is now automatically scoped to PMs, and the UI looks like this (commit):
2: This commit added support for the in:messages keyword. It works the same as in:personal (which is still available), but now we prioritize in:messages in the UI.
